Cabinet clears Rs.5,000 cr expansion across 3 airports
In a bid to boost air connectivity across three airports including Chennai, Lucknow, and Guwahati, the CEEA sanctioned Rs.5,000 crore for capacity expansion across these airports. Chennai airport has a capacity to handle 23 million, which now will go up to 35 million. Similarly, construction of new integrated terminal at the Lucknow airport will have an area of 88,000 sqm along with the existing terminal building with 16,292 sqm. This will take the annual capacity to 13.6 million passengers, from the current 3.5 million and would cater to the requirement of passenger growth up to 2030-31, and at the Guwahati airport, the government aims to build the new terminal building with an area of 1.02 lakh sqm to enhance the passenger handling capacity to 9 million, from 3.5 million currently. The building would cater to the requirement of passenger growth up to 2026-27 and the move will encourage investment in tourism sector in the North-Eastern region with a thrust on Act East Policy of the Central government, CEEA in a statement claimed.
