The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Regional Connectivity Scheme – Modified UDAN Scheme with a total outlay of Rs 28,840 crore for a period of ten years from FY 2026-27 to FY 2035-36.

As part of the approved projects, the scheme includes the development of 100 airports from existing unserved airstrips with a capital outlay of Rs 12,159 crore, aimed at expanding regional air connectivity and strengthening aviation infrastructure across underserved regions.

The scheme also provides for operation and maintenance support for around 441 aerodromes, including airports, heliports and water aerodromes, with an estimated allocation of Rs 2,577 crore to ensure their viability and sustained operations.

In addition, the Cabinet has approved the development of 200 modern helipads across hilly, remote, island and aspirational regions at an estimated cost of Rs 3,661 crore, to improve last-mile connectivity and emergency response capabilities.

The approved plan also includes viability gap funding of Rs 10,043 crore over ten years to support airline operations on regional routes, along with the procurement of indigenous aircraft, including HAL Dhruv helicopters and HAL Dornier aircraft, to strengthen connectivity in difficult terrains.

These projects are aimed at enhancing regional connectivity, boosting tourism and economic growth in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, and expanding India’s aviation infrastructure as part of the broader Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
