C&C Construction secures Rs.1,600 cr Mizoram-Myanmar NH project

India has finally awarded the Mizoram-Myanmar 109-km long Kaladan road project to a Delhi-based C&C Construction Company at an investment of Rs.1,600 crore. The mega venture is a multi-modal transport project in Myanmar that will offer connectivity to Mizoram in India as Kaladan is the first major project taken up by India in the bordering country. The road aimed at connecting Paletwa river terminal to Zorinpui in Mizoram border and the construction work is all set to start very shortly. It may be recalled that India completed the construction of Sittwe port, at the estuary of Kaladan river in trouble-prone Rakhine state of Myanmar last year. Construction of the river terminal 158 km upstream and dredging of the river to ensure navigability are in the final stages. On the Indian side, extension of the Aizawl-Saiha National Highway by 90 km to the international border at Zorinpui, at the southern tip of Mizoram, is almost over. Mooted in 2003, India entered a framework agreement with Myanmar for Kaladan project in 2008. Construction began in 2010 with a deadline in June 2015 but due to lackadaisical attitude of road building agencies, the project remained in limbo to date.
