Budget injects Rs. 16,065-cr in NE roads

With the allocation of Rs. 16,065-cr to build new highways in the North-Eastern region and upgrading the existing ones in the Budget 2017-18 proposals, the road and highway sector is bracing for huge facelift in the area. In its entirety, the government has allocated Rs. 5,765cr and Rs. 7,300-cr has been kept aside for development of roads owned by states and another sum of Rs. 3,000-cr will be invested on the maintenance work across the region. Through the funds to be raised by NHAI, the government has planned to undertake construction of 2,000 km of coastal expressways. These highways across coastal region of the country will be taken up in states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha, claimed MoRTH in an official statement.
