Goa's Rs 100 Crore Comba Road Overbridge Gets Technical Approval, Awaits Financial Clearance

Road Overbridge
The proposed road overbridge (ROB) at Comba in Margao, Goa, estimated to cost more than Rs 100 crore, has received technical approval from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and is awaiting financial clearance. The project aims to ease congestion at the busy railway level crossing and improve connectivity between Margao city and the Western Bypass.

Goa Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Digambar Kamat said the four-legged overbridge would be built along the Margao ring road, carrying traffic over the railway crossing and directing vehicles towards Khareband and the Damodar College complex.

Kamat said the railway crossing gate closes frequently, causing traffic delays. The existing subway also requires vehicles to negotiate a sharp U-turn within limited space, making it difficult for traffic to move smoothly.

The project is proposed under the Union government's Setu Bandhan scheme. Its approval had been pending since Kamat raised the matter with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in Delhi in July 2024.

A PWD survey found that approximately 17,000 vehicles cross the Comba railway level crossing daily. The existing subway is also prone to flooding during the monsoon, further affecting traffic movement.

The Comba overbridge is expected to complement the proposed missing link in the Margao ring road and help reduce congestion in the area. However, a separate 0.9 km flyover forming part of the ring road project has yet to be tendered, despite receiving central government approval around two years ago.
