Brihanumbai Municipal Corporation has fast tracked the ₹4,700 crore, 12.2km long east-west connector, an ambitious project of the civic body aimed at easing traffic congestion. However, the cost to construct a road linking Goregaon and Mulund is set to escalate because a tunnel has now been proposed; it will pass through Film City in Goregaon (east). The detailed report of the project had earlier proposed that the link road be on par with the existing road at Film City. Keeping this in mind, the civic body has asked the project consultant to revise the project report. A civic official associated with the project said that now it has been decided that the road going through Film City would be made using the cut and cover design for a 1.6 km long tunnel, and another 4.7 km tunnel would go through the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The cost of the project will rise due to the new type of tunnel proposed. The total length of the road from Western Express Highway in Goregaon to Eastern Express Highway in Mulund will be 12.2 km. Additional municipal commissioner Vijay Singhal who is in charge of the project said that the Bombay Natural History Society will conduct the study before the project work begins and the impact on flora and fauna. The civic body is hopeful of kick-starting the work shortly.
