BMC plans 15 tunnels on coastal road project

The Mumbai coastal road, connecting Princess Street flyover and Worli sea link, will have two separate tunnels, one 20-25 metres below south Mumbai's Girgaum Chowpatty area and the other 70-75m below Malabar Hill. Both the tunnels running parallel to each other connecting 13 cross tunnels for better movement of vehicular vehicles in the heart of the city. The tunnel network will also be aimed at using in case of emergency to rescue people and vehicles and that as per the civic officials, both the tunnels will be built as per the codified international standards with the use of hi-tech technology. The tunnels, running under Girgaum Chowpatty and Malabar Hill, will be 3.45 kms each and will also have a life span of 120 years and will also preserve and restore the glory of seventh century old camel hump shaped bridge in the city, said an official spokesperson of BMC.
