BIAL launches ₹13,000-cr expansion at KIA airport

The Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL), which operates the Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore (KIA), has planned massive capacity expansion including building second terminal at a cost of ₹13,000 crores, informed MD & CEO, BIAL, Hari Marar. The revised master plan envisaged development of the second terminal in a phased manner. Phase-1 has been awarded to L&T for developing over 2.5 lakh sqm space to handle around 25 million passengers per annum, and Phase 2 will add an additional capacity of passengers per annum. There are nearly 100 projects being undertaken under the new expansion such as construction of terminal 2, a new runway connected with taxiways and metro. The second terminal will also see a slew of technologies embedded in most operational aspects. The existing main access road will be transformed into 10 lanes and a new 6-lane southern access road is also on the cards along with a multi-modal transport hub that will come up in Terminal 2.
