Th FM in her Budget announcements has earmarked ₹18,600 crore for the Bengaluru suburban rail project connecting Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), According to Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Enterprises (K-RIDE), the SPV which is executing the project, unveiled the 148-km project with four corridors: KSR Bengaluru City -Devanahalli, Byappanahalli-Chikkabanavara, Kengeri-Cantonment-Whitefield and Heelalige-Rajanukunte. The proposal has been sent to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) for mandatory approvals. According to K-RIDE, the KSR Bengaluru City-Yelahanka- KIA- Devanahalli (41.4km) line is likely to become operational by 2022 as the construction work is being taken up on priority. It will be built at an estimated cost of ₹5,127 crore and will provide direct connectivity to the terminal. The ₹10,584 crore Silk Board-KR Puram (ORR)-KIA Metro corridor projects are scheduled to open only in 2024. BMRCL in December invited tenders for the ORR line, while tenders for KR Puram-KIA section are likely to be floated by this month. Official sources maintain that most of the land acquisitions have been completed and soil testing is in full swing.
