Uttarakhand gets ₹700-cr twin tunnels in Mussoorie

tunnel project
The Union Road Transport and Highways Minister has announced two-lane tunnels worth ₹700 crore to address the traffic problems in the heart of the hill town. The contract for building the two-lane tunnel has been awarded to Project Management Consultancy (PMC). The tunnel would be 2.74-km long and would provide easier and congestion-free connectivity to Mussoorie town, Mall Road and LBSNAA (IAS Academy). The twin tunnel project would be a long-term solution to traffic bottlenecks in the town. Once constructed, the tunnels should help ease traffic congestion as the vehicles passing through the tunnel and going towards Gangotri-Yamunotri, Uttarkashi and Kempty falls can be diverted. However, environmentalists expressed concern at the move and dubbed this a dangerous step taken in haste, because the area is in a seismically active zone and the tunnel could pose grave risks to the hills.
