Union Cabinet Approves International Airport Status for Madurai Airport in Tamil Nadu

Chennai-Airport
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the declaration of Madurai Airport in Madurai as an international airport.

Madurai Airport, one of the oldest airports in Tamil Nadu, serves as a key gateway to southern parts of the state. The airport plays an important role in facilitating tourism and pilgrimage travel to the historic temple city.

Granting international status is expected to enhance regional and global connectivity, boost tourism, promote trade and support broader economic development in the region. The upgrade will also help attract international pilgrims and business travellers, reinforcing Madurai’s position as a major cultural and economic centre in southern India.
