UltraTech's Green Mining Efforts Recognized with Top IBM Star Ratings

Thirteen limestone mines operated by UltraTech Cement Limited were recognised for excellence in sustainable mining by the Indian Bureau of Mines, Ministry of Mines, for FY 2023-24.

Of the thirteen mines, twelve received the prestigious 5-star rating, while the Naokari Limestone Mine, part of UltraTech’s Awarpur Cement Works in Chandrapur district, Maharashtra, earned a rare 7-star rating for its outstanding efforts in 'Green Mining'. UltraTech has been awarded the highest number of 5-star rated mines across all mineral categories, including limestone, iron ore, bauxite, lead-zinc, and manganese, for the second year in a row.

The Naokari Limestone Mine has consistently received a 5-star rating since the program's inception and was elevated to a 7-star rating this year for pioneering ‘Zero-Waste Mining’ practices. Initiatives such as reusing lime sludge from paper mills have extended the mine’s operational life. The Awarpur Cement Works was also praised for its sustainability-driven innovations, including floating solar panels, waste heat recovery systems, and women empowerment initiatives like the Dharanya Kanya Scheme, which trains women to operate heavy earthmoving machinery.

At the programme marking the event, the Union Minister of Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, felicitated UltraTech, India’s largest cement and Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC) company, for the outstanding achievements of these mines towards sustainable development and operation for the performance year 2023–24. The felicitation ceremony was also graced by Mr. Bhajan Lal Sharma, the Chief Minister of Rajasthan.
