Indian Underground LPG Storage Project Wins Gold at ITA Tunnelling Awards 2026

Indian Underground LPG Storage Project
India’s underground LPG storage project has won the Gold Medal at the ITA Tunnelling Awards 2026, recognising the country’s work in underground energy infrastructure.

The project was developed to utilise geological formations for storing energy resources and support India’s growing energy requirements. Its development involved translating the concept of underground LPG storage into an operational engineering project, overcoming technical and construction challenges along the way.

The award recognises the contribution of Engineers India Limited (EIL) and the teams involved in developing the project. The achievement also highlights the role of underground infrastructure in strengthening India’s energy security.

The recognition was acknowledged by the Tunnelling Association of India (TAI) and the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA-AITES). The project team also credited the support of the Government of India, particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri, along with EIL management and CMD Atul Gupta.
