Centre Approves Parallel Tunnel Along Chenani–Nashri Stretch of NH-44

Tunnel Project
Union Minister Jitendra Singh has announced the approval of a proposal to construct a new two-lane tube tunnel parallel to the existing Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel on the Chenani–Nashri section of NH-44 in Jammu & Kashmir.

The proposed tunnel is aimed at easing growing traffic congestion on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway and enhancing connectivity between Udhampur and Ramban districts.

The existing 9.28-km-long tunnel, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2017, is India's longest road tunnel and serves as a vital all-weather link on NH-44 through the lower Himalayas at an elevation of about 1,200 metres.

Officials said the new parallel tunnel will significantly enhance traffic-carrying capacity, improve road safety and strengthen the resilience of the strategic Jammu–Srinagar corridor, which serves as the primary surface link connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country.

The project is expected to further improve all-weather connectivity, reduce travel disruptions and support both civilian and strategic transportation needs in the region.
