Tunnel Projects worth over ₹2 lakh cr in the pipeline: Gadkari
Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has announced that 74 tunnels, covering over 273 kms and involving an investment of ₹1 lakh crore, will be constructed across the country to enhance network connectivity. The Minister also mentioned tunnel projects worth over Rs. 2 lakh crore in the pipeline, further emphasizing the government's commitment to boosting infrastructure in India. Speaking at the second edition of the Tunnelling India conference organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), he highlighted the importance of constructing high-quality infrastructure, including bridges, roads, and tunnels. He emphasized the necessity of reducing logistics costs from the current 14-16% to 9% to enhance exports. The minister also underscored the importance of conserving fuel by adopting alternative energy sources.
He also informed the gathering that work is currently underway on 69 tunnels, covering 134 kms, with a budget of ₹40,000 crore. The minister also highlighted concerns about landslides and public safety, while emphasizing the importance of high-quality construction. Performance audits are more crucial than financial audits in ensuring project success. He advocated for the use of precast, fiber steel, and stainless steel, particularly in projects near the sea, to enhance durability and safety. Gadkari pointed out that the Shivaji statue would not have collapsed if it had been constructed using stainless steel. He urged the industry to adopt cost-effective solutions without compromising on quality and suggested reusing materials excavated during tunneling.
