Trichy City has floated tenders for carrying out ADB financed ₹336 crore phase III of works to cover 15 out of the total 65 wards in the city. The corporation has received the much-awaited funds from the Asian Development Bank and tenders have been floated by the civic body to facilitate at least 32,000 drainage connections under the package, including the recently-added wards of the corporation. Currently, only 31% of the corporation area has access to an underground sewage system, while the rest of the city’s residents depend on septic tanks to dispose off their sewage. As per the sewerage master plan, the underground drainage system is to be expanded in two phases with phase II covering the East zone (Ariyamangalam) in three packages; and the West zone (Ponmalai and K Abishekapuram) in a single package. The urban local body and Tamil Nadu Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation (TUFIDCO) will also fund the project. As a separate package, the work for a new sewage treatment plant at Kalkandarkottai will commence shortly.
