Shyam Metalics Invests ₹600 Cr to Boost Steel Production in West Bengal

SMEL

Shyam Metalics and Energy Ltd. (SMEL) has invested ₹600 crore to commission a 0.77 MTPA blast furnace and a 1.11 MTPA sinter plant at its Jamuria facility, expanding its production capabilities to meet rising steel demand. The new blast furnace, equipped with advanced coal dust injection, a 550 cubic meter volume, and top-fired stoves, enhances production efficiency while improving margins by approximately ₹700 per tonne. Additionally, an 18 MW Top Gas Pressure Recovery Turbine (TRT) will aid in energy recovery, cutting power usage by 10%.

The sinter plant will process iron ore fines for the blast furnace, further optimizing costs. Shyam Metalics' focus on operational efficiency includes water-saving evaporative cooling and zero-process water discharge, underscoring their commitment to sustainable growth. Mr. Brij Bhushan Agarwal, Vice Chairman & MD, noted that this expansion will support India's steel industry and create regional employment. Supported by engineering from SDM China, the facility leverages high-pressure, high-temperature technology to enable greater coal injection and energy efficiency, advancing SMEL’s growth strategy.
