The Tamil Nadu state government is expediting the Rs 7,272 crore intra-city river linking project, focusing on Cauvery-Vaigai-Gundar in Karur, Tiruchi, and Pudukottai districts. Land acquisition, a crucial step, is underway for the project requiring 427.81 hectares in Karur, 200.41 hectares in Tiruchi, and 585.05 hectares in Pudukottai. The first phase involves constructing a 118.45 km canal from Mayanur barrage to South Vellar at a cost of Rs. 6,941 crore. Currently, 237.97 hectares of land have been acquired. The canal, originating from the Mayanur barrage, will carry surplus water from the Cauvery to South Vellar, Vaigai, and Gundar, with a capacity of 6,000 cusecs. The initial phase aims to irrigate 42,170 acres and supply water to 342 irrigation tanks across the three districts.
