Plans afoot to build new Mumbai-Goa Expressway

expressway
The road connectivity between Mumbai and Goa is likely to get a further boost as an 'express' upgrade with the state government in Maharashtra announcing a new access-controlled high-speed expressway between Mumbai and Goa, similar to the Mumbai-Pune expressway and Samruddhi Corridor to Nagpur. The proposal for the greenfield road project is being sent to the Centre for approval. The Union government is currently developing the Mumbai-Goa highway into four lanes under the 1622- km-long economic corridor between Mumbai and Kanyakumari. The new project with a length of 470 km will connect Panvel in Mumbai to Pollen in South Goa. Connectivity to the Konkan region is crucial for taking Maharashtra's development potential to the next level. Currently, the Mumbai-Goa route sees 27000-45000 passenger car units (PCUs) daily. The 701-km long Samruddhi Mahamarg or Nagpur-Mumbai Super Communication Expressway is a partially opened 6-lane access-controlled expressway between the state capital and Nagpur. It is one of the country's longest greenfield road projects. The first phase of the expressway from Nagpur to Shirdi was inaugurated by the PM in December last year, while the second phase from Shirdi to Mumbai will be opened in 2023.
