The Ministry of Road Transport has taken a serious view of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) practice of initiating construction work and awarding contracts for road widening projects before receiving formal authorization. Flagging this rampant bypassing of norms, the ministry has instructed NHAI to cease this practice and seek post facto approval for projects that have already been awarded. The ministry has conveyed to the highways authority that the current approach is contrary to the law. According to the NH Act, NHAI is only permitted to undertake any work or issue contracts once the road stretches have been officially designated as National Highways (NHs) and the responsibility for these roads has been officially transferred to NHAI.
