In an attempt to improve safety and reduce cost of construction, the Union transport ministry is contemplating replacing steel crash barriers in national highway buildings with bamboo. The technology, which is patented in India meets European safety standards, is expected to bring down the cost of construction by 20 per cent. The Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways plans to initiate trial projects across 25 states covering a length of 86 per cent of highways. The use of bamboo crash barriers could benefit growers besides reducing cost of construction by 20 per cent.
