MoRTH Deploys Truck Mounted Attenuators to Enhance Highway Safety Across Key Projects

MoRTH-Attenuators
Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is strengthening highway safety standards with the deployment of advanced Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMAs) across multiple National Highway projects, as part of its broader push to align infrastructure development with global safety practices. The initiative focuses on protecting both on-ground workers and road users, especially in high-risk construction and maintenance zones.

As part of this effort, a concessionaire managing nine National Highway projects spanning 681 km across Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat has deployed 33 TMAs along with 15 Towable Truck Mounted Attenuators (TTMAs). These systems are equipped with high-intensity wig-wag warning lights that provide early visual alerts to approaching drivers, particularly useful on high-speed corridors and during low-visibility conditions.

Truck Mounted Attenuators are impact-absorbing safety devices designed to reduce the force of collisions by dissipating kinetic energy. Their deployment helps safeguard maintenance crews working ahead of the vehicle, lowers injury risks for motorists, and minimizes accident severity in work zones. All installed units comply with globally recognised safety standards, including MASH Test Level-3 and NCHRP 350 Test Level-3, and are designed to withstand impacts at speeds of up to 100 km/h.

The rollout reflects MoRTH’s continued emphasis on integrating safety into highway expansion, ensuring that as road networks grow, protection for workers and commuters remains a priority.
