BMC to build elevated corridor on Western Express Highway

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to construct an elevated corridor over the Western Express Highway (WEH), with an estimated budget of Rs 5,500 crore. The tender for this significant project will be initiated once the government approves the detailed project report (DPR). The DPR is expected to be prepared within the next five to six months, and the entire project is anticipated to be completed within a four-year timeframe from the commencement date.

Spanning approximately 25 km, the elevated section of the highway will feature three to four single-pier cable-stayed bridges, which will seamlessly connect to underpasses at various junctions. The proposed concept design entails a 15.3-km-long elevated corridor, specifically between Mahim and Malad, divided into three to four sections supported by the bridges.

This infrastructure development will result in a substantial increase in the number of lanes on both carriageways, accommodating a total of 14 to 16 lanes, including the addition of lanes underneath the elevated corridor and the construction of tunnels. The strategically placed tunnels will be implemented at crucial junctions such as Kala Nagar, JVLR, and Aarey. Furthermore, the upgraded corridor will prioritize pedestrian facilities, including wider sidewalks and thoughtfully landscaped median spaces, enhancing safety and convenience for pedestrians.
