In a bid to address the scarcity of water across 13 districts of the state, the Rajasthan government has revived the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project, which proposes to transfer excess waters from the Chambal river basin to these districts. It had recently highlighted the issue at the national level with the State Water Resources Minister B.D. Kalla seeking a special Central assistance for the construction of the project and sought ₹43,000 crore under the Jal Jeevan Mission. The ERCP and the Chambal-Brahmani-Bisalpur link projects hold a permanent solution to the drinking water problem. Development of water resources and linking of surface water bodies are the key areas of work. The previous BJP government in the state had also lobbied for the Centre's approval for the ambitious project of interlinking the rivers. The Central Water Commission has already given in-principle approval to the project‘s feasibility report.
