Railways Approves Rs 757 Cr Fourth Line Between Tambaram & Chengalpattu

Railway
The Ministry of Railways has approved the laying of a fourth railway line between Tambaram and Chengalpattu at an estimated cost of Rs 757.18 crore, aimed at enhancing rail connectivity and easing congestion in Tamil Nadu, the Southern Railway announced.

The Tambaram–Chengalpattu section, part of the Chennai Beach–Villupuram–Tiruchirappalli–Kanyakumari corridor, currently operates with three lines, catering to a mix of suburban, express, and freight trains. Heavy traffic on this route has led to frequent congestion, affecting punctuality and capacity expansion.

With current capacity utilisation at 87%, and projected to rise to 136%, the new fourth line will significantly improve suburban train operations, reduce delays, and promote a modal shift from road to rail, benefiting both passenger and freight traffic across southern districts.
