Railway speeds up ₹83,360-cr Bilaspur-Manali-Leh rail line
The Indian Railways fast tracked the 465-km long and the world's highest Bilaspur-Manali-Leh railway line. The ₹83,360 crore project is scheduled to be commissioned by 2022. The strategic line that snakes along the Indo-China border, will help faster movement of armed forces along the border, boost tourism and allied developmental activities across the Himalayan region. Declared a national project, it is set to be at the highest point of 5360 metres above sea level and is comparable only to China’s Qinghai-Tibet rail line. The 51-km long section from Upshi in HP and Phe in Leh will be completed at an investment of ₹5,000 crore in two years. On completion, Manali, Mandi, Upshi, Sundernagar, Koksar, Karu, Keylong, Darcha and other important towns will get the shortest connectivity, and travel time between Delhi and Leh will reduce from the current 40 hours to 20 hours. The rail line will crisscross through 74 tunnels along the Himalayan terrain and will have 124 major and 396 minor bridges. It will house Keylong railway station in HP as the first station of Indian Railways to be built inside a tunnel.
