The state PWD in West Bengal has decided to build a new bridge over the tracks at Tallah area in Kolkata. The new 5.5 meter wider bridge with a deck size of 24m in width, will entail an investment of ₹350 crore, and its load-bearing capacity will be about 400 tons as against the current 250 tons. PWD sources informed that the government is pulling down the old structure which was commissioned in 1962. T The existing pillars will be pulled down and new ones built to bear the load of the wider decks. PWD has already carried out soil testing to identify the exact location of the pillars. The new structure will adhere to the standards laid down by the Indian Road Congress — the apex body of highway engineers in the country - which has specified the load-bearing capacity of the rail over-bridge.
