OMCs Install 236 EV Charging Stations on Key South India Highways; Bengaluru–Chennai Corridor Identified for Zero-Emission Trucking

EV-Charging-Infra
According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), state-run oil marketing companies—IOCL, BPCL and HPCL—have installed 236 EV charging stations along four major South India corridors. This includes 30 chargers on the Bengaluru–Chennai Expressway, 64 on the Bengaluru–Hyderabad Highway, 33 on the Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway and 109 on the Bengaluru–Pune Highway. Of the total, 149 have been installed and 87 fully commissioned.

In addition to public-sector installations, private companies are also free to set up EV charging stations as an unlicensed activity, following the Ministry of Power’s guidelines issued on September 17, 2024. No dedicated study has yet been conducted to determine the adequacy of charging infrastructure on these routes.

Inputs from the Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor (PSA) indicate that a comprehensive readiness assessment of national corridors for Zero-Emission Trucks (ZETs) has been completed. The report, India’s Priority Corridors for Zero-Emission Trucking released on May 9, 2025, identifies ten priority corridors, including the Bengaluru–Chennai corridor, for early electric truck deployment.

India’s national transmission grid is adequately developed to support growing EV charging demand, with continuous capacity augmentation to manage increasing power flow across regions and major load centres.
