To deal with the likely traffic congestion once all phases of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway is commissioned, NHAI has decided to develop a portion of NH-235 to serve as an alternative route to the Hapur-Meerut stretch of the high-speed corridor. Vehicular load on DME and NH-9 is expected to increase on completion of the expressway, said NHAI project director, RP Singh. NH-235 is a 60-km-long stretch connecting Bulandshahr to Meerut via Hapur. NHAI is investing ₹868 crore to strengthen the stretch of which 30-km Hapur to Meerut section is a part of it. Singh said that Meerut-bound commuters from Delhi can take the DME from Sarai Kale Khan to Dasna in Ghaziabad before commencing on the 30-km route to Meerut. A commuter heading towards Meerut will also have the option to take NH-235 from Hapur. The 14-lane DME has been divided into two parts with three lanes on either side, which is called the DME, and eight lanes in the middle called NH-9. The expressway will do away with 31 traffic signals on the Delhi-Meerut road, which is the busiest highway in the region.
