NHAI unveils ₹650 cr tunnel on Pune-Satara highway
The NHAI is all set to start construction work on a proposed tunnel that will eliminate the treacherous S curve in the Khambatki ghat section of the Pune-Satara highway at an investment of ₹650 crore. The nodal agency claimed that the tender process for the civil work is nearly complete and that NHAI will execute the project as it has already received details of land acquisition awards from the Satara district administration. The tunnel will come as a relief to thousands of people that drive on this highway stretch on daily basis thereby risking their lives on the dangerous S bend after exiting the tunnel. An official said NHAI has been working on the proposal for the new tunnel since last year as project of this magnitude requires a lot of administrative work, which has been underway for the past few months. The most vital part of this work, which includes the tender process, has really progressed at an appreciable pace. The six-lane, two-way tunnel will give motorists direct access to the other side of the hill through a tunnel enabling vehicles coming from Satara to not to drive on the existing ghat road.
