In a bid to accommodate maximum vehicles to ensure safety of road users, the NHAI has decided to build six lanes an elevated road corridor in Chennai Port-Maduravoyal. The detailed project report (DPR) is currently underway. The NHAI and State government are awaiting the final DPR being prepared by a consultant covering work on the design aspects of corridor that runs along the Cooum river for most part and also the revised cost estimate. A technical committee had suggested certain changes in the design of the pillars for the project that would de-congest Poonamallee High Road and improve traffic to the port. Port users expressed the hope that the project would begin and freight movement to the Chennai port would improve and the project is being launched very shortly as the Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has already cleared the project and also the extent of land belonging to the Navy had now been reduced after the redesigning of the mega corridor project, said official sources.
