NHAI has fast-tracked a four-lane 225-km long Shimla-Matour national highway project entailing an investment of ₹10,000 crore. The project, touted to be one of the best highways in the hilly terrain, will reduce the distance between Shimla and Matour in Kangra district by 45 km. Construction of the NH-88 (now NH-103), has been divided into five packages: the stretch from Shimla to Shalaghat (Solan); Shalaghat to Nauni Chowk in Bilaspur; Bagher Bilaspur to Kohali in Hamirpur; Kohali to Jwalamukhi Bypass-l; and Jwalamukhi bypass to Kangra bypass. NHAI has hired Inter Continental Consultants and Technocrats for carrying out a survey for preparation of the DPRs, by April 30, 2019. The company has completed preparation of two packages: Matour to Jwalamukhi, which is already notified, and Jwalamukhi to Kohli in Hamirpur is awaiting final approval. The stretch will have 9 tunnels, 4 high-rise bridges crisscrossing major towns, including Darlaghat, Bilaspur, Hamirpur and Jwalamukhi, and will house three toll plazas at Ghanatti, Hamirpur and Jwalamukhi.
