The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to fast track the ambitious pod taxi project in the National Capital Region (NCR) at an investment of Rs. 800cr. The Union Government decided to execute it under NHAI and four global firms have already qualified in the initial bids. The project also known as Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) or Metrino - is one of the first of its kind and is very popular globally. Previously, it was being explored whether to do it under the Tramways Act or the NHAI Act, Road Transport and Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari said that the government will soon invite financial bids for the Metrino project that will let passengers travel in driverless pods suspended on a ropeway in the NCR. The pilot project will be for 12.3 km stretch from Delhi-Haryana border on NH 8 (near Ambience Mall) to Badshahpur via Rajiv Chowk, IFFCO, and Sohna Road. Four global companies - one from London which has worked in this regard at the Heathrow Airport, one from the UAE, one from the US, and one from Poland, have qualified in initial technical bids, he added.
