NHAI Clarifies No Impact on FASTag Transactions

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has clarified that the NPCI Circular No. NPCI/2024-25/NETC/004A, dated 28.01.2025, will not affect FASTag users. Contrary to reports, the rule regarding transaction decline for inactive FASTags does not impact customer experience.
The circular, issued by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), is aimed at resolving disputes between Acquirer and Issuer Banks and ensuring transactions occur within a reasonable timeframe after a vehicle crosses a Toll Plaza.
All National Highway Toll Plazas operate on the ICD 2.5 protocol, enabling real-time FASTag status updates, allowing customers to recharge anytime before crossing the toll. However, some State Highway Toll Plazas still use the older ICD 2.4 protocol, which requires frequent updates. Plans are underway to upgrade them to ICD 2.5 soon.
NHAI encourages FASTag users to link their wallets to UPI or bank accounts for auto-recharge to avoid manual top-ups. Users can continue recharging through UPI, net banking, and other payment channels before reaching the toll.
