National Highway Development in NE Border Areas Progressing Steadily

National Highway Development

The development and maintenance of National Highways (NHs), including those in the North Eastern (NE) states and border areas, is an ongoing process. Projects are undertaken based on priority, traffic density, and alignment with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (NMP).

Currently, 16 NHs connect the NE states with neighboring countries—China, Bhutan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. Over the last five years, 468 development projects covering 9,337 km have been implemented in the region at a cost of ₹1,51,246 crore. Of these, 232 projects have been completed, while the remaining 236 are set for completion by 2028.
