The widening of the highly-congested Bengaluru-Mysuru Road will start at an investment of Rs.7,000 crore with the laying of the foundation stone by Transport minister Nitin Gadkari. To speed up the work, it has been divided into two packages: Bengaluru-Nidaghatta and Nidaghatta to Mysuru. One of the biggest issues is land acquisition, which is in the advanced stages in both the packages. Though the foundation laying ceremony has already taken place, the actual work on the project is set to start very shortly. The project has been taken up on hybrid annuity model. The Union Government had declared the earlier SH 17 and SH 88 as new National Highway No. 275 in 2014 and since then the project has been lying in limbo. The widening project stretch takes off near the Panchamukhi Temple after Kengeri town and ends at the Columbia Asia Hospital junction on the Mysore Ring Road at existing 135.100 km. The existing lane configuration is a dual lane (7m) divided carriageway with earthen shoulders. This road stretch comes under the administrative jurisdiction of NHAI in Karnataka and passes through the major Towns like Bidadi, Ramanagara, Channapatna, Maddur, Mandya, and Srirangapatna.
