MoHUA Approves ₹860.35 Cr for West Bengal Under SBM-U 2.0

MoHUA
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has approved proposals worth ₹860.35 crores for West Bengal under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 (SBM-U 2.0). Compared to the ₹911.34 crores allocated during the first phase of SBM-U (2014-19), the funding has increased by 1.5 times to ₹1,449.30 crores for SBM-U 2.0 (2021-26).

The Ministry is collaborating closely with West Bengal to improve waste management and sanitation. Among the 118 legacy waste dumpsites in the state, only 5% of the waste has been remediated. The Dhapa landfill in Kolkata, the city's primary dumping ground since 1987, is undergoing bio-mining and bioremediation as per National Green Tribunal (NGT) guidelines, allowing the extraction of usable materials from the waste.
