Nearly a month after the lockdown brought construction activities to a grinding halt, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has restarted construction on all its nine Metro rail corridors, especially in non-containment zones in the city. Shortly after the Union government's guidelines on relaxation of lockdown norms, MMRDA has directed contractors to begin work after getting approval from the local civic bodies. Construction work has already begun on flyovers, the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL), and on metro lines, and have put in place precautionary measures at project sites. All the workers have been provided safety kits like face masks, gloves and hand sanitizers. However, the delay so far is likely to impact project deadlines with lockdown still on across the country, delivery of important components may get delayed, MMRDA commissioner RA Rajeev has announced that the organization has decided to bear the additional cost of maintaining around 11,000 laborers, besides ensuring sanitation and health check-ups in their shelter camps.
