MMRDA mulls 10 new metro corridors worth ₹1 lakh-cr
Apart from the upcoming metro corridors in the metropolitan city, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is working on 10 more Metro corridors that will change the travel pattern of commuters from North to South Mumbai, in the next three years. Currently, more than 70 lakh passengers travel daily using the suburban railway trains. It is anticipated that the upcoming Metro network will handle an additional 90 lakh passengers daily. The total expense for construction of the proposed Metro corridors will be over ₹1 lakh crore for which the MMRDA including the MMRC are taking loans from international and domestic financial institutions and banks. Commuters residing in areas like Dahisar and Borivali can take the Metro-7 corridor that is proposed to be extended up to the airport, from where the Metro-3 underground corridor will take them all the way up to Colaba. Commuters travelling from the central suburbs to the western suburbs, can take the existing Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro-1 corridor and change to the Metro-2A corridor at DN Nagar station and travel all the way up to Dahisar from where, another extension up to Bhayander is also in the pipeline, said official sources.
