GMRC plans ₹400-cr metro link corridor to airport
The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) has planned to build a Metro station and Metro-link corridor at the Ahmedabad International Airport Limited (AIAL). After the completion of this project at an investment of ₹400 crore the passengers in transit will board the Metro to travel to the airport or other locations nearby. The Terminal-II will be close to the proposed location of the Metro station. The procedure for land purchase and other regulatory permissions will start shortly and hectic negotiation between Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC), the airport operator, and other stakeholders is currently going on. Official sources stated that the project, which is a part of Ahmedabad Metro Phase-II, is expected to be operational by 2025. The Airport Master Plan also includes additional projects like developing a new integrated terminal, renovating the current terminal structures, repaving the runway and related projects, establishing a multimodal transportation hub, building a new cargo terminal, and even building an entirely new tower for the air traffic controllers (ATC). An area of 9,840 square metres is earmarked in the Airports Authority of India (AAI) colony, near the present location of the office of AAI, where the new tower will come up. The ATC tower and technical block will have a built-up area of 13,570 square metres.
