In its quest to build road network matching established standards, the state government in Maharashtra has decided to build, strengthen, and widening of around 21,000km of roads and is actively seeking funds from Asian Development Bank. In fact, it aims to link industrial clusters and providing top class connectivity enabling farmers to transport their produce to the nearest available market and that the project cost will be recovered through toll on commercial vehicles and also from budgetary support, State Public Works Department (PWD) minister, Chandrakant Patil said, elaborating further that PWD has around 84,000km of roads and it is necessary to re-do around 21,000km of them at an estimated cost of about Rs. 2-cr per km. In its scheme of things, the government is ensuring various types of connectivity through these roads covering industrial clusters, villages, airports, wildlife hubs, warehousing facilities, etc., to store farm-produce and tourist destinations. In addition, it also aimed to connect pilgrimage centres including Ashtavinayaka' circuit comprising eight temples of Lord Ganesha located in Pune, Raigad,and Ahmednagar, among others, he insisted.
