L&T Construction, which is the wholly owned arm of Larsen and Toubro (L&T), has started the construction work of the second phase of Kazhakkoottam-Karode road widening project. In view of this, the city is set to get a concrete national highway being built in line with the specification of ministry of road transport and highways. As a matter of fact, NHAI has decided to construct the 16.2km road using concrete, exactly matching to the global standard. The Mukkola-Karode road will be constructed in a new alignment, for which the estimated cost is Rs. 2,033.62cr, said NHAI sources, adding that the use of concrete will help in reducing steel and bitumen and also ensure durability. Against the usual construction, which involves use of large quantity of bitumen, this method will use more cement and concrete and that for the first phase of works involving widening of 26.798km more of the road, the construction cost is Rs. 621.22cr. The second phase of works cost Rs. 1,412.42cr. While the first phase involves widening of an existing road in 45 metres, the second one involves construction of a new corridor in the same width.
