L&T Bags Order to Build Cable-Stayed Bridge to Sagar Island in West Bengal

Larsen-and-Toubro
Larsen & Toubro’s Transportation Infrastructure business has won a significant order to construct an arterial extradosed cable-stayed bridge over the Muri Ganga River in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. The project includes a 3.2 km 2+2 lane cable-stayed bridge with a maximum span of 177 metres, supported by a 0.9 km approach road on the Kakdwip side and a 0.65 km approach road on the Sagar Island side. The bridge will feature advanced traffic management systems, a bridge health monitoring system, architectural lighting, hybrid street lighting and other road furniture.

The bridge will provide direct, all-weather connectivity to Sagar Island, which currently relies on ferry services that are frequently affected by adverse weather. The project will benefit more than two lakh residents by improving mobility, access to healthcare and economic opportunities. It will also support the annual Ganga Sagar Mela by enabling safe, uninterrupted travel for millions of pilgrims from across India. Beyond its social impact, the new link is expected to boost tourism, trade and local businesses, transforming Sagar Island’s socio-economic landscape.
