Kolkata Metro to Build Seven New Traction Substations on Blue Line

Kolkata-Metro
Metro Railway Kolkata will construct seven additional traction substations along its Blue Line to upgrade services, amenities, and passenger safety. The Blue Line, stretching from Dakshineswar to Sahid Khudiram (Birji), is India’s oldest metro corridor at 41 years, and the new substations aim to modernise its power and operational systems.

The substations will come up at Kalighat, Netaji Bhawan, Maidan, Esplanade, MG Road, Sovabazar–Sutanuti, and between Belgachia and Shyambazar. With this upgrade, the Blue Line will have a traction substation at every station, similar to the Purple Line (Joka–Majerhat) and Orange Line (Kavi Subhas–Beleghata).

To meet rising traction power demand with enhanced fire safety, Metro Railway has already placed orders for two additional Traction Substations (TSS) at Chandni Chowk and Geetanjali (Naktala). The Chandni Chowk TSS will help ease rake congestion between Esplanade and Central stations.

Upgrades to the ventilation and cooling systems of stations and tunnels are also underway, further strengthening passenger comfort and operational efficiency.
