Kolkata Metro Seeks ₹20 Cr from KMDA for Chingrighata Underpass

Kolkata Metro has asked the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) to contribute ₹20 crore, half of the cost, for the proposed pedestrian underpass at Chingrighata. Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), the implementing agency of the New Garia–Airport Metro corridor, will bear the remaining cost as per its agreement with the state government. KMDA has also been requested to approve the construction methodology submitted by RVNL three years ago.
As reported earlier, RVNL is preparing a detailed project report for the three-way underpass after traffic police withheld weekend traffic blocks at the busy intersection. These traffic blocks are essential for completing the final 366m viaduct stretch of the Orange Line’s Ruby–Sector V section. With girder launching stalled since February 2, RVNL is unlikely to meet the June 2025 completion target for the 8km Phase II segment.
