JICA Signs Loan Agreement for Phase-2 of Chennai Peripheral RR Project

This project holds significance as a priority initiative within the 'Comprehensive Integrated Master Plan for Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (2015)', established through an agreement between the Governments of Japan and India.
The primary objective of the project is to address the escalating traffic demands in the Chennai metropolitan area, alleviate congestion, and reduce transportation time by approximately 40 minutes to and from Chennai and Ennore ports. This will be achieved through the construction of a 26.3 km Peripheral Ring Road and the implementation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
JICA had previously supported the construction of Section 1 of the project, covering the northernmost segment of the Peripheral Ring Road, through a loan agreement signed in March 2018. The current phase focuses on Section 5, the southernmost part of the Peripheral Ring Road, and the integration of ITS from Sections 2 to 5.
The loan agreement was formalized between Vikas Sheel, Additional Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, and Saito Mitsunori, Chief Representative of JICA India.
