Infra Projects Worth Rs 150 Cr+ See Rs 5.66 Lakh Cr Cost Overrun: MoSPI Report

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has reported a cumulative cost overrun of Rs 5.66 lakh crore across central sector infrastructure projects valued at Rs 150 crore and above, according to its February 2026 flash report.

The report covers 1,948 ongoing projects monitored across 17 central ministries and departments, with the revised total project cost estimated at Rs 41.98 lakh crore compared to the original cost of Rs 36.32 lakh crore.

As per the data, cumulative expenditure on these projects has reached Rs 19.71 lakh crore, accounting for about 46.95 per cent of the revised project cost, indicating steady progress in implementation.

A significant number of projects are at advanced stages, with 740 projects achieving over 80 per cent physical progress and 250 projects crossing 80 per cent financial completion. The report also highlights a balanced distribution of projects across various stages of execution.

The transport and logistics sector accounts for the largest share, with 1,421 projects and revised estimates of Rs 22.96 lakh crore, reflecting the government’s continued focus on connectivity-led infrastructure development.

Out of the total, 793 are mega projects with a cost of Rs 1,000 crore and above, accounting for Rs 30.93 lakh crore, while 1,155 projects fall in the major category with costs up to Rs 1,000 crore, totalling Rs 5.39 lakh crore.
