Narmada Control Authority Approves One-Time Settlement of Sardar Sarovar Project Dues Among Four States

Sardar Sarovar Project
The 15th meeting of the Review Committee for Narmada Control Authority (RCNCA) was held via video conferencing on October 27, 2026, under the chairmanship of Union Minister of Jal Shakti and RCNCA Chairman C. R. Paatil. The meeting was attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma.

The RCNCA adopted the opinion of the Attorney General for India and the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed on July 7, 2026, in New Delhi by the four states in the presence of Union Home Affairs and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah and Union Minister of Jal Shakti C. R. Paatil. The agreement provides for a one-time settlement of all pending inter-state dues, claims and financial liabilities. The committee also approved the modalities for payment of the outstanding dues.

The adoption of the MoA marks a milestone in resolving long-standing disputes among Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra over cost-sharing for the construction of the Sardar Sarovar Project. The agreement establishes a framework for settling the pending payments through a one-time arrangement.

C. R. Paatil thanked the chief ministers of the four states for their cooperation in adopting the Attorney General's opinion and the MoA, and for finalising the payment modalities for outstanding dues related to projects under the Narmada Water Disputes Tribunal (NWDT) Award within the financial year 2026-27.

He said that, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, efforts were being made to resolve inter-state river water disputes. He also acknowledged the work of officials from the participating states, the Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation (DoWR, RD & GR), and the Narmada Control Authority in preparing the agreement and convening the 15th RCNCA meeting to ratify it.
