GCC to build two multi-modal hubs in Chennai

multi modal hub
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has decided to build multi-modal transport hubs at two major locations - Guindy and Washermenpet to facilitate the commuters in accessing various modes of public transportation like bus, metro rail and others from one point. The project will be carried out under the GCC’s Mega Street project which aims to redevelop the city roads to promote non-motorized traffic. 150 kilometres of road and allied facilities will be developed in a phased manner. In Guindy, roads behind the Guindy Railway station including Velachery Road will also be taken up under the project. Roads around Washermenpet Metro station and Washermenpet railway station are also being taken up on priority basis.

Under the project, escalators, pedestrian pathways, skywalks and other facilities will be provided to interlink various transport modes including MTC. The authorities have started preparing the project report based on which the project will be implemented jointly by the civic body, state Highways Department, Southern Railway and Chennai Metro Rail Limited. The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) and the civic authorities conducted a primary inspection of the area and selected Guindy and Washermenpet as the main hot spots that see a huge rush during peak hours.
