India Unveils Copper & Aluminium Vision Documents to Support Green Growth
Union Minister for Coal and Mines Shri G. Kishan Reddy released the Copper Vision Document and the Aluminium Vision Document at the International Conference on Sustainable and Responsible Mining through Best Mine Closure Practices, organized by the Indian National Committee of the World Mining Congress in Hyderabad.

Highlighting copper’s strategic importance, Shri Reddy stated that the Copper Vision Document lays out a long-term roadmap to meet the rising demand from India’s energy transition, EVs, solar power, and infrastructure growth. The document, developed in consultation with key stakeholders such as HCL, Hindalco, Kutch Copper, Vedanta, Indo-Asia Copper, Lohum, IPCPA, and the International Copper Association, forecasts a sixfold rise in demand by 2047. It targets adding 5 MTPA smelting and refining capacity by 2030 and aims to boost secondary refining, domestic recycling, and secure overseas mineral assets to reduce import dependency.
The Aluminium Vision Document emphasizes the government's push toward a self-reliant and resource-secure India. It outlines a strategic plan to expand aluminium production sixfold by 2047, raise bauxite output to 150 MTPA, double the national recycling rate, and adopt low-carbon technologies. The document was created with inputs from NALCO, Hindalco, Vedanta, JNARDDC, AAI, ASMA, and MRAI.
Both Vision Documents align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047 and aim to build globally competitive, environmentally responsible, and resilient copper and aluminium industries.
